Busy bee....

I have been busy making these last few weeks which feels good. Making things and getting stuck in is my one true love and spending a day printing is bliss for me.

So valentines is almost upon us, a day which I am very indifferent to but for couples it can be a big deal. Still struggling with gift ideas that go beyond the flowers and chocolates? well look no further.

As you can probably tell from my most recent work I have a thing for tattoos. I don't have nay myself, yet, but I love looking at them on other people and more recently I have got a thing for drawing them and the style of imagery in traditional tattoos.

I'm thinking up a few ideas for things to come in the future but I have just had a session of drawing out some postcards with fun designs on which are now available here!

Ohh Deer.....

I have been a regular to the 'Ohh Deer' website which stocks a wide range of stationary, cards and gifts illustrated by a whole range of wonderful people, and they also stock in shops like urban outfitters and Selfridges. They run regular competitions to find new contributors but the difference is they use the publics opinion and how much the images are liked and shared as well as what will fit in with their brand.

The current competition is to find a new range of greetings cards. If you are an illustrator I say get involved, it's as simple as uploading 4 images and getting as many shares/likes/and notice as possible. The link to get involves is here.

I’ve always had a thing for girls with tattoos

After not having a lot of inspiration recently I was ready to make something but had no ideas. After the sleeve cover design i had done for the Secret 7” project I wanted to try more of the simplistic style of illustrating and have an excuse to spend a day looking at traditional style tattoos again! I found a photograph of a girl in a bikini which I liked and then went from there adding to it. I started to carve whilst catching up on some Kardashian goodness and then by the end of the day had the beginnings of an edition of prints which I’m a little bit in love with.

I am definitely going to be trying out a lot more line style prints as I loved how it came out and you can get in more detail than if you were trying to carve the black lines out.

Back to basics

So I’ve been getting back to pen and paper for a while as I’ve missed just drawing in ink and as a result have created a few cards and postcards! The postcards are available here as a pick and mix of 3.

Rawr

Haven’t really down anything digital for a while but have enjoyed this pattern making and little drawing.

I might print onto some postcard and maybe translate this onto some stamps as well and see how that goes. It’s nice to just make stuff with no focus on what it has to become.

Take Cover

So this weeks been ever so exciting for me and I don’t care if people are bored of me talking about it, it’s a big deal to me! This week I went to check out the Secret 7” show and see my sleeve design in the flesh. It’s all still a big secret until next week so I can’t reveal my design just yet but I did take a few other pictures of designs that I liked.
There was everything from a smily face, an x-ray sleeve, one made from ceramics and some gorgeous illustration and design. The open brief meant that everyone really had a bit of fun and ran with it to creative the most diverse range of work I’ve ever seen in one space.
The private view was great, despite having to fly solo, I did manage to pluck up the courage to chat to a few people and it had a really good atmosphere. You really got the feeling that everyone was excited to be involved and the range of work and experience in the designers made for a show which anyone and everyone could enjoy and appreciate. Not forgetting of course that all the money goes to charity.
I also popped along at the weekend with my parents and the atmosphere was just as good with the sun shiny and the dj playing an eclectic mix of music.

I would urge anyone create to submit something next year because you never know your design could be picked too!

All sleeves are up for sale for £45, with the proceeds going to war child, on the 19th April (record store day), and once you buy one you’ll find out who it’s by and what track it is. Secret7s

So my shop is ready to go live pretty soon! Just a few things up there but I am hoping to add some one off bits and bobs as things progress. I though I’d put up a few more images and things here as I can only add 1 on big cartel!

Höch and Hockney

Höch’s Made for a Party’ (1936) Collection of IFA, Stuttgart

So yesterday I decided to take a trip to London and see some exhibitions and gain some inspiration because I was feeling a bit ‘bleurgh’ about everything. Firstly I went to the Hannah Höch exhibition at Whitechapel gallery which I was bursting to go see. I have long been a big fan of the Dadaists work but have never seen it up close. The exhibition was well worth going to and a real insight into the issues that her photomontages address, some of the work I was familiar with but there was a wide range of things I hadn’t seen before. Seeing Hannah’s work up close you are really able to see her use of negative space, cutouts and creating a whole from very separate unrelated parts. Her work is rough and punchy but the components work together so delicately and her use of juxtaposition is on point.

I also noticed a few woodblock prints by Höch which really stuck with me. They didn’t look like prints, they looked like ink drawings, something which I had never tried when relief printing. Usually marks created by the tools are quite obvious and recognisable, but Höchs woodcuts create loose textured marks amongst precisely cut lettering. I had never seen a print up close that looked that much like a drawing.

All in all it’s well worth a visit if you can make it!

I then ventured to West Dulwich to The Dulwich Picture Gallery to see Hockney Printmaker. "This joyous show of his 60-year printmaking career reminds us that, for all his grumbles lately, David Hockney has been one of Britain's great artists - Alastair Smart, The Telegraph” I think this sums things up pretty well, Hockney is pretty amazing and the show did not disappoint. Despite being rather busy as it was half term it was amazing to see that although Hockney has such a long spanning printing career he never stopped experimenting. In each set of prints he explores something different and pushes the medium.
At the beginning of the exhibition we see a diploma that Hockney printed himself showing him and 4 fellow students crushed under the weight of the diploma, as he was threatened with failing after refusing to write his final essay saying that images were his medium not words.
One of my favourite series was the Weather series, a set of lithographs depicting different weather inspired by the representation go weather in japanese prints. You get a real sense of how the weather feels through how the imagery looks.

'Walking past two chairs' is a print in which Hockney screen printed onto the glass and frame surrounding the print, blurring the boundaries between the work and the viewer. Creating another dimension and offsetting the viewer and image.

Again well worth a visit even if it is a bit out of the way. Hockney’s drawings and constant experimentation are enough to get anyones creative justices flowing!

I Also took a little trip to the V&A whilst in London, although it was half term it wasn’t as busy as I was expecting and was nice enough to have a little explore around. I did a few doodles and drawings, I wish I could just sit and draw stuff in London all day everyday. There not particular good or exciting but drawing from life is much more exciting and you gain more skills than drawing from an image.

Oh and I also popped into the shop to have a mooch around and found these cute patterned paper bags, the smallest was about 25p and the large was 45p I think. I have a thing for paper bags at the moment and these colours so it was a must. Also got a cute wooden geometric ruler which I couldn’t not buy!
